Common questions about aviation medicals answered here

Frequently asked questions

These FAQs will help you get organized before your aviation medical examination. Your Aviation Medical is done online through the CASA Medical Record System. You can access this if you have an ARN (Aviation Reference Number).

You need to complete your medical history, pay the CASA processing fee and Submit it before your DAME will be able to access it.

How long does it take for my medical examination to be processed?

Your exam and test results will be submitted to CASA as soon as  they are available. The processing time depends on the volume and complexity of your application. In general, you should receive it within 20 business days.

I need to Renew my Medical Certificate – when should I get it done?

If you can attend your appointment with your DAME 2-4 weeks before it is due to expire, it will give you time to get any tests done and sort out any medical issues. Your DAME will be able to re-validate your medical certificate if your appointment is before the due date.

What tests does CASA require with aviation medicals?

For Class 1 and 3, fasting blood sugar and lipids, ECG, and audiometry are required with the initial exam. Thereafter, it depends on your age – see here.

An eye examination is required with the initial assessment, and from the age of 60 and onward, eye exams are required second yearly.

How long is the Medical Certificate valid for?
Class 1Valid for one year.
Class 2Valid for four years, if aged under than 40 years on the day of issue, and for aged 40 or over, valid for two years. Basic Class 2 is valid for five years, for those under 40 years of age on the day of issue, and for 40 years or over, valid for two years.
Class 3Valid for two years.
What should I bring for my medical examination?

Bring a Photo ID (Driver’s License or Passport) and have your ARN handy. If you have had any blood tests or an ECG(report and tracing required) within the lasts 3 months, bring a copy of these. If you have any new specialist reports since your last exam, bring these for upload. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, don’t forget to bring your spare pair as vision testing is required for the spare as well as the current pair.

How is my fitness to fly determined?

This is determined by the CASA medical team. Your DAME can temporarily re-validate your medical certificate if it is close to the expiry date.

Medical practitioners and/or DAMEs can assess for Basic Class 2. Some DAMEs can assess and provide a medical certificate for certain Class 2 applications (DAME2 assessors). All other medicals are assessed by the CASA medical team.
