You need a Class II medical certificate for these licences:
- Recreational Pilot Licence
- Private Pilot Licence
- Commercial Pilot (Balloon) Licence
A Class II medical certificate will assess your medical fitness to fly when you are training and also if you only plan to fly privately. If you are a student pilot and plan to work as a commercial pilot, you should apply for the Class I medical which have a few more tests (Audiometry, Blood tests and ECG).
Commercial pilots with a Class II medical certificate can only fly commercial flights without passengers if the maximum take-off weight is less than 8618 kilograms. This includes in-flight training.
Student pilots must have a Class II (or Basic Class II) medical certificate before they can fly solo.
Certificates are valid for 4 years if you are under 40 years on the day of your medical examination. If you are over 40 years, Class II certificates are valid for 2 years.
To start the process of obtaining your Class II Medical certificate, Log on to the Medical Records System, complete your medical history and pay the CASA processing fee. Click on Submit. Make an appointment with your DAME to complete the medical assessment.
Basic Class II medical certificate
Since July 2018, a Basic Class 2 medical certificate is available as an alternative to a full Class 2 certificate for private operations. It has the following operational restrictions:
- only private day operations under the visual flight rules (VFR) and below 10,000 feet
- a maximum of 5 passengers
- only piston engine aircraft
- maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of less than 8618kg
- no use of operational ratings (e.g. instructor rating, instrument rating)
- no use of flight activity endorsements (e.g. aerobatics, low level).
These restrictions don’t apply if a suitably qualified pilot with a valid Class 1 or Class 2 medical certificate is in a control seat.
You can get a Basic Class II examination from any medical practitioner who does medicals for commercial motor vehicle drivers. The medical standard is exactly the same as the commercial driver standard (Austroads).
Basic Class II medicals are valid for 5 years if you are under 40 and 2 years if you are 40 years or over.
