Sydney aviation medical examination for Australian pilots

New Pilots

For the initial assessment, a full Aviation Eye examination is also required. To start the process, you will need to apply for an Aviation Reference Number (ARN) with CASA. This will allow you to be identified in all your interactions with CASA. If you have not yet got your ARN, click here to apply.

Once you have your ARN, you can start the process of obtaining your Aviation Medical by signing in to the Medical Record System (MRS) here. Submit your medical history, pay the CASA processing fee and submit the history so that it can be accessed by your DAME.

On the day of the medical, we will go through your medical history with you. The physical exam includes vision, hearing, blood pressure, pulse, height, weight, general medical examination and urine analysis.

Additional tests required as part of the Initial Aviation Medical: ECG, audiogram, estimation of fasting serum lipids and fasting blood glucose, calculation of cardiovascular risk and an eye examination by a CASA Designated Aviation Ophthalmologist or Credentialed Optometrist.

Once all the information has been submitted to CASA, you will have your Medical Certificate in 10-21 days (depending on the complexity of your case and the number of assessments that CASA have to process at the time).

Renewals for Existing Pilots

You would be familiar with CASA’s online Medical Record System (MRS) and would have submitted or updated your medical history online before booking your Aviation Medical. If there are any outstanding medical issues, you may have received a letter via email about any specialist reports or tests required to be submitted as part of your aviation medical.

Once you have submitted your history and received a confirmation email from CASA, you can book your medical assessment. You may wish to obtain any blood tests (Fasting blood sugar level, cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL) and ECG (report and tracing required) from your family doctor prior to your appointment. The frequency of blood tests and ECGs depends on your age – Or we can organize them when we see you.

A simple urine analysis (dipstick) is part of the routine medical, so make sure you are hydrated and able to provide this when we give you the specimen container.
